Andrew and I had an interesting experience about ten days ago.
He had come to Columbia with the children to celebrate Labor Day, and I’d asked him to take me to Costco.
I needed a pork loin to use for the barbecue pork sandwiches I was serving, and also a birthday cake.
In my memory, Costco used to sell pre-made plain sheet cakes that you could get them to decorate.
Well, they don’t do that anymore; now if you want a sheet cake, you have to order it in advance.
Which I had not done.
Three-year-old angst
At any rate, their half sheet cake (there is no one-fourth sheet cake, which I also thought I remembered being a thing) serves forty-eight people, which is approximately thirty more pieces of cake than we needed.
So, as I have done before, I opted to buy their excellent cheesecake.
We picked one up and got the attention of a lady working behind the scenes, in the bakery.
I asked if she could pipe a greeting onto our cheesecake and she said of course, and gave me a piece of paper to write on.
I wrote:
Happy Birthday
Stephanie and Guy
Andrew suggested that we ask for both pink and blue icing on the sentiment and the names.
Elliot a/k/a Skippy: almost three, in church
Because we were killing two birds with one stone.
Our Stephanie always has a birthday in the week of Labor Day, so our tradition for many years has been to combine the definitive end-of-summer celebration with her birthday party.
But our little Guy had turned three on August twenty-fourth, and we had not been with him at his party in East Tennessee on that day.
So we decided to make the birthday party for both of them.
OK now here’s where we got into the weeds. Apparently.
I wrote on the paper and handed it back to the nice lady, who got to work with tubes of pink and blue icing.
Impromptu name change
In no time, she had handed our cheesecake back to us. We thanked her and walked away.
And then I looked at the cheesecake.
It bore these words:
Happy Birthday
Stephanie and Gruy
You read that correctly: GRUY.
No.
I stopped in my tracks and told Andrew to look at the cake and he burst out laughing. What in the world??? He said.
Gruy, paying attention in church
It took me awhile (but not too long) to figure out what had happened. Of course it was my fault.
When I write a capital G, the way I do it is, I make the big C and then I make a line OUT and DOWN to form a G.
The lady with the pink and blue icing tubes interpreted the OUT and DOWN part of the G as a lower case R.
But, Andrew spluttered. Who thinks Gruy is a name???
Well I mean, have you seen the names floating around these days? You can’t even pronounce them, much less have any hope of spelling them.
But, I reasoned, what I would have done is clarified. I mean, we were standing right there. I would have read what the customer wrote, and then just to be sure, I would have asked — is this name Gruy? G-R-U-Y?
Rhett and Ember: Rhember in September
At least I like to think that’s what I would have done, were I behind the glass cases at Costco, being asked to pipe names onto cakes.
But I don’t think she even read what I wrote beforehand; I think she just picked up the icing tubes and started piping, and wrote what she thought she saw.
I’m not mad at her, because she wrote it real nice and so forth, and that is more than I could have done.
But still.
OK so as you know, none of this matters. We all laughed at the cake and called Guy “Gruy” for much of the day. Which he had no prayer of comprehending.
But since he was busy swimming and pouting and napping and eating and opening presents, there was no reaction.
And when we consumed the cheesecake, with the berry compote I’d made still warm on top, whomever got the icing R that should not have been there, did not taste it.
No one knew why Gruy was out of sorts
However.
Sometimes words, and what they mean, do matter. They do make a difference. Like for instance.
About three weeks ago, our Rizzo had a brief health crisis.
I had to drop everything and tend to it, which included TG taking him to the vet early one morning and leaving him, and my going back later that afternoon after another appointment, to pick him up.
He’d had a procedure and was in some pain, and I babied him for the rest of the evening and everything turned out all right because we have a great vet, who has been taking care of Rizzo since I got him for thirty-five dollars at the rescue shelter nearly ten years ago.
The next day, I received a text from the vet’s office.
Whatever his name is, he's all boy
It said: We just wanted to reach out and see how Rizzo is doing after their appointment yesterday.
? ? ? ? ?
Now, maybe you read that without noticing what they did there.
But to me, it hit like a note so discordant, it pierced the virtual ear. It screeched like the proverbial fingernails on a chalkboard, if there is even anyone left who knows what THAT means.
I could have let it go. But I didn’t. Sometimes you’ve just had enough, and you have to speak up. This was one of those times.
Maybe you would not have engaged. But I did.
I answered: Rizzo is a male, and there is only one of him, so it was HIS appointment and not their appointment, haha 🤗.
Then I updated them on how Rizzo was feeling and thanked them for inquiring as to his wellbeing.
He perked up for presents
Because, dear reader, I had no desire to be mean but this craziness needs to stop. It is OKAY to refer to people by their correct gender — of which there are exactly TWO.
You are either a male or a female, period, and as such you’re not a they, a them, or a their. You are either a he or a she.
Oh I know: No one is supposed to say that anymore. The plain unvarnished truth is anathema to the left, so the rest of us have to shut up.
No.
I will not shut up. It’s ridiculous and it’s offensive to refer to my pet with a gender-neutral personal pronoun. Don’t start that nonsense with my DOG.
Brudders
As far as I know, no one has ever confused me with a male. May it ever be so (and trust me; you will never catch me appearing to be physically ambiguous in that respect), but the day someone refers to me with a gender-neutral pronoun, I will correct them in no uncertain terms.
Enough of that.
A few more things, and you’ll probably be saying, but those are yeses and this post is about no.
Well, I wanted to end on a positive note.
Dagny and Rhett are home schooled — she in seventh grade and he in Kindergarten — and classes have begun.
Erica moved the boys into what had been Rhett's bedroom alone, because there are bunk beds, and turned Elliot’s nursery into a classroom which is a firm affirmative to education.
They are having a ball and I’m pretty sure that Elliot a/k/a Skippy will soak up lots of knowledge just by hanging around during lessons.
Rhett says yes to academia
The day before Labor Day, we all said yes to church, as we do every Sunday. It was such a treat having five of our eight grandchildren in services with us.
It was after lunch at Waffle House (a tradition for TG and me most Sundays) that we put Guy down for his nap, and Andrew and I made the aforementioned trip to Costco for cake and other supplies.
Stephanie and Joel arrived on Monday morning with Melanie and Little Andrew (who is not exactly little anymore, being a freshman in high school).
Allissa is away at Bible college and could not be with us, and it’s hard to believe that she is that grown up, but there you have it.
We had the pulled pork barbecue sandwiches along with smoky baked beans and tangy slaw and freshly deviled eggs and a wide assortment of chips and soft drinks. It was a delectable repast.
Followed by the cheesecake and warm berry compote, and some Costco cupcakes, which were a big hit.
Rhelliot wrung every drop out of a sparkling summer
Then Guy opened his gifts (I think he was bewildered because I could almost hear him thinking, but didn’t we already do this a few days ago?) and said yes to all of his new toys.
Stephanie opened her gifts and seemed pleased with them, and we visited for a while longer, but all too soon, everyone had to start heading for home.
Speaking of home, in my next post I’m going to tell you something special and new about mine.
I hope you are making the most of your September, which is already half gone.
But we will savor it — and the months to follow — until the day break, and the shadows flee away!
And that is all for now.

Happy Wednesday

I wonder why he was so out of sorts with all the balloons, cake and gifts? Who knows what goes through the mind of someone at that age. Gruy turned out better than Guy, as you all had such fun with it. Your pool is gorgeous! And now I can't wait till your next post!!
ReplyDeleteHi Ginny! I think you will really like my next post. And I think you'd just have to know Guy to get the answer to your first question, haha! He tends to be moody. It's like the sun goes behind clouds and then comes out again, then goes back in again, and sometimes there is rain! But it's all good! We have learned to work around his little consternations, hahaha! xoxo 🏴☠️
DeleteI was ever so happy to see the Pirate pop up in my feed! And I enjoyed every bit of this post, but especially those gorgeous grandkids who just keep growing. I'm glad you got some pics of Guy being out of sorts. Those pictures will be enjoyed when he's older.
ReplyDeleteGruy is hilarious and I suspect the name will live on as has happened to Bon in the past.
I found out about the cake situation at Costco in the same way you did and it's a bummer... However, if you want another suggestion for a yummy dessert from them, the tuxedo cake is beyond delicious (and can be bought ahead and frozen).
The classroom for Rhett is perfect and I know lots of good things will be taught there.
I'm glad Rizzo is doing ok. Yes, I also heard the screeching on the chalkboard when I read that note. The whole pronoun thing is so ridiculous and now it's being applied to dogs too? I'm glad you responded.
How long do I have to wait for the next post? Because now I am really curious and a bit impatient....
Haha thanks for the tip about the tuxedo cake and I will definitely get one of those next time! Yes those grands are growing. Dagny is twelve years three months and looks every day of fifteen. Rhett is so tall, I can't even. Guy and Ember are both moody types. We think it's so funny. We just love on them when they're that way, hahaha! You will not have to wait long, I promise! I was going to include it in this post but it was getting too long, hahaha! xoxo 🏴☠️
DeleteHello my friend! It is so good to see a post from you. I loved seeing all of your pictures of the birthday celebration. They are all growing so quickly.
ReplyDeleteThere is a serious lack of common sense in our world. Why would she not confirm what she was putting on the cake? At least you have a funny story from it.
I am so tired of this pronoun stuff. Can you believe the Catholic hospital that I work for sent out a message a year or so ago to include our pronouns on our email signature. Did I do that? You know I did not. Now they are including dogs?? Unbelievable.
The humidity has gone down here a bit, but we are still in the high 90's low 100's. I am so ready for Fall.
I can't wait for your next post to see what else is new in your world.
Big hugs my friend!!
Well all I can say is, good for you for refusing to "include your pronouns" ... you know I would not have done it either! So ridiculous. And from a Catholic hospital! For shame. This world has gone stark raving mad. Sometime you should look up online funny things that have been mistakenly written on cakes. Some of them are obviously staged but there are some really hysterical ones! I hope your weather cools down very soon, my dear! The fall weather will truly be a welcome gift. xoxo 🏴☠️
DeleteHa ha That is too funny about the cheesecake and Gruy! Probably in my family that would have been his joking around name for a long time! He's super cute though! The vet office calling Rizzo they is beyond ridiculous! I totally agree, this nonsense has to stop! Happy birthday to Stephanie and Guy! Good to hear from you friend!
ReplyDeleteHello Jeanette! Yes it was pretty funny and I don't think it will stick but we had some fun with it on the day. He was clueless, haha! Yeah the vet front desk girls need to back right on down. I don't think the doctors would be okay with beginning to refer to the animals with gender-neutral pronouns. But I'm equally sure that I'm likely the only one who said anything! That's usually the way it is. Hope you find a good estate sale soon! I love the pics! xoxo 🏴☠️
DeleteMy Dear Pirate,
ReplyDeleteI will stand with you and say "NO MORE" to this nonsense. Good grief, I think our Ernie would have given his two cents to that nonsense as well!!
It was good to read a post from you today. Your common sense is refreshing in this crazy world.
Happy Birthday to your Stephanie and Guy.
xo
Yes my friend I appreciate that you stand with me! I could have let it go but I was just so appalled that I could not. Of course they ignored me, haha! I don't care. Hope you and Jeremy and Ernie and the boys are all doing well! Happy almost autumn! xoxo 🏴☠️
DeleteEnjoyed this post and all the great and colorful pictures, Jenny! Before I forget, yes, I love the white cream filled donuts AND the pudding ones too, they BOTH ARE SO delicious to me, LOL. That birthday cheesecake is so pretty and still cant believe lady didn't question the spelling......like you, I WOULD HAVE. Oh well, at least it tasted good and it will be a funny story for the future. Little Andrew is A FRESHMAN?? Wow, when did THAT HAPPEN? LOL. The grandkids grow up so quickly don' they? And Allissa is off to college, she's such a beautiful young woman, hope she's liking college. Glad Rizzo is doing okay, hope it wasn't serious? MERRY FALL as it will be arriving soon! Have y'all closed down the pool yet? HUGS!
ReplyDeleteGirl that "Little Andrew" is as tall as me and so handsome, and just quite a guy! He will turn fifteen early next year but he's so responsible, somehow he seems older. No Rizzo's issue was not serious but he's getting older so I don't let anything slide. YES Merry Fall and NO we were in the pool just today! The water is still 82 degrees! The hummingbirds were swooping and chattering and feeding as we swam. Bittersweet because it will soon all be gone until next year! xoxo 🏴☠️
DeleteLittle Andrew??? A Freshman??? How on God's green Earth, did That happen???? Unbelievable...
ReplyDeleteThe cake? Lolol...I would have removed the R and put a candle in it's place. But it Was cute!
And the pronoun??? Omggg...so glad you said something! Yes mam...people need to stop tolerating that garbage.
Big hug
Donna
Hello my friend, and yes the years are rolling on and these kids are becoming little adults! It boggles the mind. And you are right -- we must not tolerate it! I will stick up for my pets and their genders, hahaha xoxo 🏴☠️
DeleteOMGOSH- When I read that I just assumed that the writer of the note from the vet had just made a mistake in their wordage and wasn't referring to Rizzo as a 'they or them'. Do you think they meant to address Rizzo as anything other than a HE...and just screwed up wording the message? lol. anyway....
ReplyDeleteLove GRUY on the cake. How comical is that?! It's the little glitches in life that we remember looking back.
How wonderful to have all the littles in church with you. That really makes for a special Sunday.
Hope you have a pirate-y good weekend. xo Diana
Well, I did consider that (briefly) but then I decided that the choice of word was deliberate. If I am wrong, then that's on me, but I notice that they ignored what I said instead of replying with sorry, our bad ... we know he's a boy, blah blah. I think that often front office people (and often the providers too) in services having to do with animals, are woke activists. This is not the first time I have encountered it. And I'm over it, hahaha! Yes it was so special to have five of our eight grands with us in church the Sunday before Labor Day. They were all hanging out in the lobby after Sunday morning service and TG and I just looked at one another and said, can you believe???? And we laughed. Life is an amazing journey. I hope you and your beloved are doing well, and I wish you a wonderful weekend too! xoxo 🏴☠️
DeleteIt's so fun seeing the photos of your family and especially how the grandkids are growing. I hope that little one wasn't too upset about his name!! Looks like a fun celebration anyway and I'll bet everyone enjoyed the cheesecake. The vet calling Rizzo ? Funny
ReplyDeleteHi Judee, haha Gruy can't read yet so he was unfazed by the misspelling. And if memory serves, he had a cupcake for dessert instead of a piece of cheesecake! We had a ball that day. Yes the vet's front office staff overstepped, haha xoxo 🏴☠️
DeleteSuch a good post, Jenny! And I am with you 100% with the gender stuff. I would have done the same thing when replying to the vet's message. Guy is so cute...even when he's got a pouty face. And I enjoyed so much seeing the pictures you tucked in of your grandchildren at church. What a precious treasure that is. xx
ReplyDeleteWell it's good to know I'm not alone in being fed up with this stuff, haha! It is insane and the pirate don't play! Yes Guy is cute even when he pouts, but a little goes a long way, haha! Yes those pictures are treasures; I agree. It is good to have them with us in church! xoxo 🏴☠️
